He will demonstrate how his build frames from scratch and demystify the process for artists and art lovers.
Throughout the Commons, three artisans from the Catskill Mountain Artisans Guild will be demonstrating their nature-inspired works.
Martha Bremer, master basket weaver, studied at the Brookfield Craft Institute in Connecticut but has been mostly self taught for the past 25 years. Her present focus is on traditional and functional styles. She has been teaching basket weaving in schools and community classes for the past two decades. At her business, Briar Creek Studio, she also does furniture restoration, specializing in cane and rush seat weaving work.
Becky Nielsen began painting river rocks just eight years ago. She enjoys hunting for the right stones, ones that have been naturally sculpted and offer hints of the final outcome. “I love developing my own techniques such as using traditional egg tempera on rocks and combining stones and paper so that the results are almost three dimensional. It gives me great joy to watch my work move out into the world, to make connections with people,” says Nielsen.
Carla Shapiro is a photographer and artist who divides her time between New York City and the Catskill Mountains. She teaches photography at Pratt Institute and has shown her work in galleries throughout the U.S. She spends every Thursday hiking throughout the region, taking photographs and collecting birch bark that has fallen from the trees. She makes housewares and frames from the bark and often uses a frame to display a photo from the hike.
