The Catskill Mountain Artisans Guild presents "Catskill Arts & Air,” an open-air art series at the Pakatakan Farmers Market every Saturday through out the summer. Our regional farmers are joined each week by local artists, writers and musicians. The festival like series is an added bonus to the great bounty, creativity and atmosphere that the Pakatakan Farmers Market already offers our community and visitors.

There will be four writer tours that will promote the watershed region, while participants can experience the vast natural resources that the Catskill region offers along with its rich, cultural history. Dr. Robert Titus will lead you on a journey through Dry Brook to explore the geological vestiges of the flood still carved in the landscape. Donald Bouton will share with you stories from eight decades of his treasured way of life on a Halcott Center farm. Mary Sive will take you on a driving tour to explore the remnants of the villages “lost” to the reservoir system and the Pepacton Cemetery. Enjoy a moderately easy and scenic four-mile hike through Kelly Hollow with David and Carol White. All writers will be at the Pakatakan Farmers Market at 9am and the tours will depart by 10am and return by 2 pm.

Artists from the Catskill Mountain Artisans Guild will be presenting ten weekly events demonstrating fine crafts ranging from Folk Art wood carvings, Basketry, Dyeing to Paper Marbling, Pottery, Quilting and more.

The Roxbury Arts will offer a free Mbira Demonstration & Workshop by Solomon Murungu with Garikai Tirikoti at the Pakatakan Farmers Market as part of their “African Day – It’s All Zimbabwe” which continues at the Roxbury Arts Center in Roxbury with a 6 PM screening of “iThemba!” a film about Zimbabwean musicians, and 8 PM concert by Murungu with Tirikoti. 2010 Academy Award-winning film producer Elinor Burkett will be on hand and sculptures of Zimbabwean artist Arnold Dube will be exhibited. For ticket reservations, call 607 326-7908. Musicians will be playing at the Farmers Market throughout the season.

The art and craft of carding, spinning and weaving will be showcased as Mountain Yarns presents a “Sheep to Shawl” demonstration. “Wild and Wooly Women” will be on hand with their looms “dressed,” spinning wheels greased and piles of fiber ready to go. During this demonstration, a shawl-length cloth will be created in just one afternoon. You can just watch the demonstration, or card some wool or spin on a spinning wheel yourself and learn what it takes to make cloth. There will be children’s activities and you can also meet some of the “wooly” animals that provide us with fleece and yarn!

Check local listings and our event calendar for dates and times.
